Wine Club

Wine Club SelectionsWine has always fascinated me, but knowing what to buy and what meal to serve it with has always been lost on me. This summer we had friends over for dinner and they brought two bottles of wine with them, which got us talking about how they choose their wines. She ordered by the glass at restaurants, then wrote down the names of the wines she really enjoys and built her wine collection that way. Then a couple weeks ago my friend, Sarah, mentioned she had joined the Sunset Magazine Wine Club. For only $40 a month (some wine clubs are nearly $100 a month) she receives two bottles of wine with information about the winery it came from, PLUS two entree recipes that pair nicely with the selection of wine.

I was hooked!

Today my first selections came – three bottles for the first month – AND I’M SO EXCITED! We plan to serve the white for dinner tomorrow when friends come over.

  1. I worked in the wine industry – well, an adjunct to the industry, as a label printer – for years n years. Along the way, I got to know a fair bit about wine.

My only advice is to drink a variety of wine and to not believe anything anyone tells you. Trust only your tastebuds. If you can, get to some wine festivals where you can taste the same variety side-by-side so you can get an idea of what is good and what is not.

AND HAVE FUN. Don’t let anyone intimidate you with their “fresh linens in the nose…” Oh, here is my favorite funny hint – when I hate something, I say “It dies on the middle palate” which is SO made up, but it shuts people the hell up because how are they going to argue with that? And then they think you know what you are talking about too.

That is so awesome I nearly snorted wine out my nose. I’m definitely using that line on the right occasion!

  3. I love it — hope I remember it the next time I need it. Incredible. If anyone is in the Ramona/Julian, CA area, do the wine tasting at the Orfila Winery. It is not only great fun, but the wine is great! And they have a great sense of humor about their wine. Best Port I ever had came from there.
